VCE - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Virtual Computing Environment (VCE)?

Top

Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) is a pre-configured computing infrastructure from the "Cloud" to meet your computing needs, while you focus on the project execution. VCE acts as a shared computer accessible from anywhere over the Internet to enhance collaboration between project members. VCE is useful as a tool to monitor your projects in real time.

What is the operating system available with a VCE?

Top

You can choose VCEs with either Linux or Windows operating system. You can find Linux VCE in multiple flavors like Ubuntu, CentOS etc. A Windows VCE comes with Microsoft Windows 2003 operating system. For exact information on pre-configured software and operating system available, please see the "Subscribe to VCE" section.

How reliable is a VCE?

Top

The VCE that you use for executing your projects is brought to you by packaging Amazon EC2 Web Services. An active, running VCE is an Amazon EC2 instance. 8KMiles relies on the Amazon Web Services, its promising technology and uptime.

What are the security features available with VCE?

Top

Every VCE is secured behind a firewall with all ports closed except port 22 (for ssh connections to Linux VCE) and port 3389 (for terminal services connection to a Windows VCE). Beyond this when a user connects through NX Client, Clipboard copy from VCE to local system is also not allowed. Buyer can control outbound network trafic from the Linux VCE at user level. Buyer can select a particular user and deny or grant ability to transfer files out of the VCE. Buyer can also control SFTP server access at individual user level. Note: By default, every user added to the VCE by a Buyer can connect to SFTP server and Outbound trafic is allowed. In case if the user need not SFTP or access Internet from with in the VCE, then you can restrict this at user level.

When is the data/configuration on a VCE is backed up?

Top

Data on every VCE is backed up when you shutdown a VCE. The data on '/' and '/8kuserdata' is backed up before actually processing the shutdown request. Please note that, the data stored on '/mnt' folder will not be backed up and any data stored on '/mnt' will be lost when you shutdown a VCE. Data backed up during shutdown is restored back to the VCE when the VCE is booted again.

How do I subscribe to a suitable VCE?

How to renew the subscription to a VCE?

Top

Renewal procedure for the VCE depends on the renewal type that was opted during the VCE subscription.

In case of Automatic renewal:

VCE is renewed on expiry of the current subscription to the VCE, automatically. Subscriber's credit card or bank account is charged with a corresponding plan fee. The initial subscription plan is considered for every automatic renewal.

In case of Manual renewal:

A "Renew" button is provided for every VCE in the VCE dashboard. On clicking this button subscriber will be given an option to choose a different plan if required and renew the subscription. What happens when the subscription to a VCE gets expired?

Top

The subscriber to the VCE is advised to renew the VCE before it expires. On expiry of the subscription, VCE will be shutdown and user will not be able to use the particular VCE. In an attempt to help our valuable user, 8KMiles provides an additional 5 days of grace period starting from the date of expiry to renew the subscription. During this grace period, subscriber is allowed to renew or terminate the subscription. User can boot back and continue to use the expired VCE when the subscription is renewed before the end of grace period. In case the subscription to the VCE is not renewed before the end of grace period, expired VCE will be deleted permanently with out any further notice. In such an event, the data or configurations on the VCE is not available for future use and can not be recovered.

I am unable to connect to the VCE by clicking on 'Connect' button. How do I get this working?

Top

On few versions of MS Windows Vista operating system, it is observed that automatic download and install of NX client is not responding properly. As a work around, please download and install the free NX client software on your PC manually and then click on 'Connect' button in the VCE dashboard. Click here to download a free NX client software from NoMachine's website.

What is Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) Dashboard?

Top

VCE dashboard helps you in monitoring your infrastructure usage and costs per projects. It also helps managing VCE by Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) Dashboard tab provides you an easy way to manage your VCEs. All the successfully subscribed VCEs will be listed to manage and use them for project execution. VCEs can be filtered per project. Any VCE which is not associated to a project is represented as "Personal".

You can perform following actions against each VCE:

On clicking Launch button provided with each VCE, you can boot the VCE and eventually the VCE will be ready to use. Launch process typically takes around 5 minutes.

Usage Tip: Launch the VCE, when you are really ready to use the VCE. On Launching a VCE, usage meter is triggered and you will be billed per usage hour.

This is a toggle button. When the VCE is running, it would function to shutdown the VCE and after shutting down, the button label changes to "Boot". On clicking Shutdown button, you can temporarily bring down the system. You are advised to shutdown the system when the VCE is not in use for a longer duration. This is a infrastructure cost saving feature to make sure that you "pay for usage". Shutdown process typically takes 5 minutes.

Usage Tip: Before shutting down the VCE, please make sure that all the users are logged off and there are no unsaved documents/data in the VCE. On shutting down the VCE, the usage meter is paused. You will not be billed during the period when the VCE is shutdown.

This is a toggle button. When the VCE is shutdown, it will function to boot the VCE. For a running VCE, the same button used to shutdown the VCE. On clicking Boot button, you can boot up the system and continue your work. You are advised to shutdown the system when the VCE is not in use for a longer duration. Shutdown process typically takes 5 minutes.

Usage Tip: Boot the VCE, when you are really ready to use the VCE and continue your work. On booting a VCE, usage meter is triggered again and you will be billed per usage hour.

This button allows you to give up the subscription of a VCE. You can not access the VCE after confirming to give up a specific VCE. This is an irreversible action and all the data and configurations are wiped off from the VCE.

Usage Tip: Please make sure that you are ready to delete the VCE permanently. This is a highly disruptive action and to be executed only with great amount of care.

You can associate a VCE to a project. After associating a VCE to a project, you can add project members as VCE users. Project members can login to the VCE and use the VCE for project execution. On associating a VCE to a project, you will see a new button against the VCE which will help you to add project members to the VCE.

You can add or remove users to a VCE using this option. You can add or remove (if already added) VCE access by selecting a project member from the list.

You can either block or allow any outbound network traffic and SFTP connection from the selected VCE at user level. By default, when the user is added to the VCE, user can generate any traffic to the outside world, can connect to the Internet and upload/download files using SFTP session. Block Outbound Network: Specific user will not be able to connect to the Internet from the VCE. Any network traffic generated by the user to the outside world is blocked. Block SFTP: Specific user will not be able to connect to this VCE using any SFTP clients. Hence, the user can not upload or download any files from the VCE using SFTP sessions.

In case you like to reset your password for a VCE, you may do so by executing this action. This feature is useful in case you forget your password or want change the password for any reason.

You can choose a port number to be opened to connect to a service running on the VCE. For example: Specify port number as '3306' if MySQL server is running on 3306.
